“Montana’s Greatest Rivalry: A College Football Classic” by Tom Donovan“Montana’s Greatest Rivalry: A College Football Classic” by Tom Donovan
Without question, this is the most comprehensive history of the Bobcat-Grizzly Football Rivalry available today! Besides identifying the players that made the first scores of this famous rivalry, including the four, five and six-point touchdowns, and five-point field goals before they became three-pointers, Tom Donovan has documented the first forward pass of the series, the last points made with a dropkick and when the Montana and Montana State teams were first required to wear helmets. Trivia lovers will really love this book. They’ll find out how many playing fields that Montana and Montana State have competed on at Bozeman, Butte and Missoula; when the game was first divided up into four quarters, and who was the first player to score in each period. The reader will learn; which was the first Bobcat-Grizzly Game heard on the radio, and the first televised contest statewide. To find this much information on this series as well as on college football, a sports fan would have to research literally hundreds of primary and secondary sources, along with conduct scores of interviews with former players, coaches, officials and football experts.

Dying to Hunt by Tom Donovan“Dying to Hunt in Montana: Two Hundred Years of Hunting Related Fatalities in Montana” by Tom Donovan
This is the second edition of the popular publication that has spawned a cult following in many parts of our state. Not only does this book document the cases of the more common hunting fatalities, which we are familiar with, but Tom has researched hundreds of strange and bizarre cases. Hunters and sportsmen have fallen off of cliffs, out of trees and from the sky in airplane crashes. Besides bear attacks, lightening strikes and by being mistaken for game, we have even documented a hunter dying from the bubonic plague. The Indians killed many early day hunters and trappers after the Lewis and Clark Expedition, including the first victim of our book, John Potts in 1808. Twenty-eight U.S. Army infantrymen perished in a freak blizzard while they were out hunting, three men were legally hanging by the State of Montana for murdering their hunting companions, and one man killed his partner in self-defense.

Hanging Two by Tom Donovan“Hanging Around the Big Sky: The Unofficial Guide to Lynching, Strangling & Legal Hangings of Montana” Book Two
While this volume describes all of the two hundred and thirty-five known executions that took place in Montana from 1862 through 1943, it covers in detail the one hundred and sixty-four illegal hangings that occurred from the first one in 1862 to the last mob lynching in 1913. Tom provides one of the best descriptions of the workings of the early Miners Courts’ along with the history of the Original Vigilantes of Bannack and Virginia City, as well as the various chapters of the Hometown Vigilance Committees. Besides these more well-known organizations, Tom describes the many Montana Lynch Mobs, and the secretive and deadly “Cowboy Stranglers of 1884,” a group of ranchers that cleaned up the prairies of horse and cattle thieves.
